My classroom is abuzz with first grade students of all academic levels and learning styles. On average I have 23 students each year eager to learn and grow. The majority of my students live in poverty. Many of them come to school without supplies because they simply cannot afford them. 90% qualify for free and reduced price lunch. Our school, though filled with economically disadvantaged students, is a place of respect and love where we strive to teach students to reach for their dreams. Our school strives to meet not only the academic needs of each student but the most basic human needs as well. We often feed and clothe them or help pay a family bill in order for them to be focused on learning. The students we serve have many challenges and hurdles to overcome but they are given the self esteem and skills necessary to do so.
