First grade is a magical year in school. Think back to your first grade teacher and how that individual made learning fun. First grade is a year in which students grow by leaps and bounds in reading, math, and writing, as well as gaining skills in science and social studies. With the growing demands of teaching the rigorous content standards, first grade students are required to sit for extended periods of the school day. No more is first grade all about coloring, taking naps, and show and tell. While these necessary skills are still incorporated into the everyday curriculum to allow students to practice their creativity and express themselves, students still spend the majority of their day staying focused on a task. A great article on the topic from The Washington Post is below: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/answer-sheet/wp/2014/07/08/why-so-many-kids-cant-sit-still-in-school-today/
