My students come from primarily low-income, single-family homes. In many ways, the students are mature beyond their years. In others, however, they have fallen behind. Basic mathematical understanding and as a result self-confidence are the two struggles that my students face the most in my classroom. The students have a strong desire to learn, but are quick to get discouraged when they deem a concept "too-difficult" for them. Building their self-confidence is more than half of the battle. As soon as they believe that they are math-capable, their ability to learn new concepts grows exponentially. They are a room full of unrealized mathematic potential.
