The use of alternative seating in our classroom will put kids in control of their own learning! The students are responsible for finding what feels best for them and what kind of seating will make them the best learner that they can be. The use of wobble chairs and floor cushions will allow the children to have mobility, able to strengthen their cores, and still be in one place for classroom learning. We all have children who won't sit still in our classrooms. We may wonder why they have to wiggle, slump, or tip the chair back? Many children with sensory processing disorders move around frequently and place their heads on the table or wrap their feet around a chair leg. These extra movements help give input to the sensory system , helping organize and calm the body and providing better body awareness. Classrooms that are student centered ARE successful! Classroom design influences levels of interaction and engagement. And we know that engagement and active learning improve retention.
