In first grade, students thrive in environments that are safe and predictable, while also meeting and encouraging them where they are at. Each student brings different interests, background knowledge and skills to their early reading experience. Therefore they each need books that fit them individually. Book boxes provide an easily accessible place to keep books that are "just right" for them. Movement is an asset in learning not an obstacle. Cushions of varying textures and flexibility offer students opportunities for sensory movement within their chair at their desk or in a different part of the room. For many students, movement is the key to accessing some of their greatest thinking potential.
