A library should be an inclusive place that meets the needs of all learners. A makerspace is a perfect addition to a library. Makerspaces allow students to get of their comfort zones by using materials they may not be familiar with. Students get hands-on opportunities to create, invent, and think outside the box. One thing about kids is that you never know what will spark their interest and motivate them to dream of their future. Legos get students thinking as an engineer. Ozobots can motivate interest in programming and computer science. Squishy circuits allow students to experiment and troubleshoot to complete a circuit using playdough! All these materials and activities get our students in the habit of thinking like a scientist and will hopefully motivate to continue that learning as they continue their education.
