I teach approximately 180 students each school year and I want to inspire them to love to read! My classroom is in one of the biggest public high schools in North Carolina. Our diverse student population includes special needs, low-achieving, and at-risk youth. English students, specifically ELL (English Language Learners) and ESL (English as a Second Language) learners often benefit from exposure to a more varied collection of reading materials. Many students struggle with the discipline to read on their own. The structure of the classroom environment lends itself to providing these deserving students with an opportunity to choose a book they're excited about, thus increasing their understanding and inspiring them to want to read more. High school students are developing their own opinions about life. When given choices, they may choose to read a book that opens their imagination and provides perspectives that may be new to them. This is how I hope to foster their love of reading.
