My students are excited to learn everything there is to know in first grade, especially to read! They thrive with hands-on activities and when there is variety in the classroom. Their excitement for learning grows anytime something new is introduced. They are a sweet group and each one of them is unique in their personality and interests. Likewise, they each differ in how they learn best. I want my students to enjoy coming to school and I want to foster their hunger for knowledge. Most of them are Hispanic and live in a household where only Spanish is spoken, so they need extra support when it comes to learning to read. They come from inner city, impoverished homes. Our school provides a safe place for them and strives to support each student not just academically, but also emotionally, physically, socially, and financially. Overall our school has a low literacy rate. We are seeking to do all we can to change that and overcome the obstacles that keep our students from being successful.
