Help me give my students the art supplies they need to do portrait art with durable Richeson Drawing Paper, Sargent chalk pastels to learn blending techniques & tempura paints in both primary and skin colors! These supplies will help me integrate the visual art of portraiture into science, social studies and writing. The students began this journey on day one when they painted a self-portrait to describe their feelings coming to a new class or new school. This painting illustrated their first narrative story about themselves. Our science core is about heredity and the genetic traits that we inherited from our family. The students will study their faces and learn to draw and paint their second portrait. We study U.S. history and how individuals and groups of people made a difference to influence changes. Our educational path follows the patriots of the revolution, the difficulties and divisions of the Civil War, Civil Rights and into our the current conflicts that mark our modern lives. Our school year ends with Memorial Day. Many students are surprised to learn of its true meaning. We will celebrate the day by writing about and painting a portrait of a veteran from our family, neighbor, or the a resident of the nearby veteran home. The journey through 5th grade is one of self-discovery. This year I want the students to see how much their art, personal communication skills, and writing have changed and improved through as they reflect and see the changes of the world through their eyes, and the eyes of others. Please make this portfolio of progress happen.
