Literacy goes hand in hand with achievement. A major part of closing the achievement gap is increasing literacy. As part of an initiative to increase literacy, the Austin Independent School District has implemented a program called Structured Independent Reading with the intention of encouraging young people to read for pleasure. A cozy spot for reading will increase the motivation to read and make reading time more enjoyable for the students, thereby increasing engagement. With this project we will be giving students a few comfy cozy spots for reading with the dorm style bean bag chairs and folding chairs. The two magazine racks will allow for easy display of non-fiction as well as some fiction materials. I have a vast collection of Time magazines the stand can display, as well as thin sports books the students love, and some amazing comic books and graphic novels which are important for increasing a love of reading! Reading for pleasure will increase student literacy, raise test scores, and most importantly, teach empathy. When students are strong critical readers, they become well informed, compassionate citizens.
