The diversity and demographics of our families present challenges that impact the education of our students. Our families are not often able to purchase books, limiting reading experiences for our students to school. Children's literacy skills are greatly enhanced when parents read to and with them. I would like to establish a family book club, with matching books for parents of readers to read and discuss together, meeting weekly or biweekly with volunteer teachers and other adults to discuss the book. For families of our youngest children, there will be access to a variety of quality read-aloud books to read and discuss with their child, such as Patricia Polacco's "Mrs. Katz and Tush." Books have been selected to celebrate the diversity of our families, including several books written in Spanish. Our families have been very responsive to fun, family events, and I believe a book club would engage our families in something new and exciting, while building critical literacy skills with our students. This also provides an opportunity for parents and children to bond; at home, students and parents are often distracted by the electronic nature of our society. Tuning into reading, and tuning out the social isolation our electronics often place us in can only serve to build communication skills, relationship skills, and interaction skills for not only our students, but our families. Even when students are involved in reading a class novel, parents do not typically have access to their own book, and cannot ask questions and have discussions about the book with students. A Book Club library will provide and amazing opportunity to enhance the lives of our families in multiple ways!
