Because I live in the same neighborhood in which I teach, I have the unique opportunity to see my students from sunrise to sunset--and sometimes beyond. The students in our neighborhood are eager for time, attention, and knowledge. Often, discussions that take place during the school day are continued in our community after school hours. We are a rural school with extremely limited funding and supplies, and many of our students do not have ANY school supplies unless we provide them. Our entire school receives free lunch because of the socioeconomic level of our student population. For some students, the breakfast and lunch we provide are their only meals. Parental involvement is limited. Many parents work nights. Some of my students do not know where they will sleep from one night to the next, and it is unrealistic to assign much homework or projects for them to complete outside of school. It is important that we make all classroom time as meaningful and productive as possible.
