In my first grade classroom, most of students are low-income, that receive the state's free lunch program and almost all face the challenges of poverty. The struggling reader cannot have the books that he or she is able to read. The student who hesitates in front of a shelf of books can not relax and browse for interesting books to take-home knowing these books are right at his or her reading level.
