My class is a hands-on classroom where manipulatives are a daily part of their learning. Unfortunately, most of my students do not have the supplies they need at home to fully engage in developmentally appropriate lessons online.
Young learners need to manipulate materials to learn to read, write, count, and so much more.
Under "normal" circumstances in our classroom, my students would see colorful alphabet and number charts as well as other anchor charts to use as a reference during whole group lessons and independent work. I want to provide the same colorful visuals at home to help them learn these concepts, so I have printed mini charts and individual task cards to go in their personal tool kits. I will need to laminate everything for durability and velcro the activities I have prepared for each student. I will also be making DIY rekenreks for Math using the beads and dowels. Additionally, I am creating an all-in-one Literacy and Math binder that is engaging and hands-on in hopes to emulate centers in the classroom. It will include differentiated activities placed in sheet protectors, which will allow students to continuously work on different skill sets by using a dry erase marker and various manipulatives. While some items may look like toys, they are used as fun tactics to get students excited about learning and interested in engineering, where their creative and critical thinking skills come into play. If and when we return to school, students will continue using these materials in the classroom as I can only assume we will not be able to have community supplies or share anything to help ensure sanitary conditions during this time.
Please help me provide all my students with the tools necessary to make distance learning more meaningful and effective.
