I am the typical 6th grade reading teacher that has steam billowing from my ears when kids utter the words,"I hate reading." After three years of teaching 6th grade ELA, I realized students weren't reading because they were choosing the wrong books. After diving into the novel "Bud Not Buddy" with my students, I saw the importance of understanding the back story and history of the time period and era of a book. Using graphic organizers and students' prior knowledge, we compared and contrasted the great depression and today. Students were instantly engaged and interested in reading about a character who overcame challenges many of them were facing behind the pages. After reading, students were inspired and learned about perseverance and success.
