I would like to incorporate a unit on engineering and the scientific process into my chemistry and physical science classes. I also want to add more reading into my science curriculum. The students and I do not enjoy reading textbooks and the vocabulary chosen can be difficult to understand for the students. I am trying to bring in more texts from sources other than their textbook. By reading "The Martian", my classes will be able to discuss how the characters were able to create unique solutions for all the difficulties faced and learn about perseverance. The book is entertaining and will keep the interest of my students. The students will also be able to look at some of the solutions utilized to criticise the choices made by the characters. While this book is a work of fiction, it tries to get the science correct and teaches how to keep going when an entire planet is working against you.
