My school has an amazing rapport with the students who fill the hallways. We are particularly encouraging when it comes to growth in reading and writing abilities. My school uses an alphabet reading level system, which matches students with a certain reading ability to an alphabet letter. Students who are on a kindergarten/beginning of 1st-grade reading level range from an A-E; students who are on a 7th or 8th-grade reading level are a Z. We aim for all students to be a Z reader, and any movement through the leveling process is highly celebrated. (We even have a Z reader parade each year!) It is beautiful to see the smile on a student's face when they finally reach that Z, or even when a student moves from a Q to a T. The students take great pride in their ability to read and their advancement through the alphabet, and it gives the teachers great pride as well!
