Funding of this project will provide me with the opportunity to learn how to implement the unique and specialized presentations of social, cognitive, emotional, and academic methods of learning for children in the early childhood Montessori settings, regardless of income levels. Quality Montessori training will provide me with additional knowledge and skills that will push me beyond that of typical early childhood teacher. For example, one unique characteristic of Montessori education is “sensorial development”. Montessori sensorial lessons utilize her specially designed materials to develop children’s ability to isolate variables such as sound, touch, smell, sight etc. One example is matching sound cylinders. Trained Montessori teachers guide children to shake small cylinders filled with items. The children have to listen carefully and match the cylinders. This exercise trains a child’s ear to discriminate well enough to eventually hear sounds when it is time to learn how to read. This is presented through what Maria Montessori termed as the “three period lesson”. Another characteristic unique to Montessori education is the development of practical life skills. Delivered via the three period lesson, Montessori practical life lessons include systematic order of tasks such as table washing, wood polishing, napkin folding, sweeping, and pouring water. Montessori’s aims of practical life skills include coordination of movement, concentration, independence, and character development. A quality Montessori teacher training program will prepare me to present three period sensorial lessons to develop many sensorial and practical life skills which will create a more solid foundation for academic learning for my children. I have so much to learn and am excited to move forward to an exciting chapter of my career! Thank you!
