About my class

My two schools have a culturally diverse and low socioeconomic population that is highly transient. Many children qualify for special education and/or ESL. Many students do not have someone at home to guide them and help them with their school work (for various reasons). Families consist of a single parent or grandparent working 2-3 jobs to pay the basic bills. Education may be important to parents but they themselves may not have the education to help their child. These children may be the first ones in their family to receive a college degree. The only meals students eat may only be at school. Students often receive 'snack packs' to take home for the weekend to hold them over until they return to school on Monday. The schools have an annual book drive and receives donated books from the community. This is to help ensure that each child has some books at home to read especially during the summer.
