Have you heard of flexible seating? I am looking to transform my fifth grade reading classroom into a student-centered area where they can choose seating that best fits their learning style. Flexible seating teaches responsibility, decision making, synergy, and self awareness. Students make a conscience decision while putting the end result in mind. Our fifth grade students need seating that allows for movement, active reading, and group work: bungee chairs, cushions, yoga balls, rocking chairs, standing desks, lap desks, wobble stools and bean bag chairs. Flexible seating helps break the monotony of traditional seated reading and helps struggling readers feel more confident and stay on-task. It allows small groups to conference and differentiated options to work on projects. Reading is an active process. Flexible seating feeds student motivation and lends to higher engagement!
