The school library for the 3rd, 4th and 5th graders, has nonfiction books from 1955 and onward. After weeding out library books with copyright dates of 1985 and older, the selection of non- fiction is few to minimal. If the school library had updated high interest nonfiction books that students are able to check out and read at home, this will develop background knowledge, critical thinking skills and acquire greater vocabulary. Because of the low percentage of students that check out from the public library, the school library is one of the only places where these students are exposed to books.
