As my students enter the Maker’s Studio each day, the first thing that they see is a large poster on the wall that says, “If you can imagine it, you can make it.” These are the words I live by and the most important words I say to my students as they begin their work. They are so capable of dreaming, designing and creating great things once I free them from the chains of fearing to take a risk and try something new or different. Designing, building and working on solutions to challenge activities leads kids toward experimenting, breaking rules, making mistakes and propels them on to the joy of creating. Increasing our supply of LEGO compatible building bricks will afford more of my students the opportunity to use these tools in our studio. We have such a limited supply at this time that I can only allow two students per class period to use them and this breaks my heart daily. I know that having more bricks for them to use and increasing the space at this Maker Station will lead to more kids making huge leaps in building that maker mindset. This generation, raised in a social media and immediate gratification time in our history, needs to learn that everything does not happen immediately. Working with LEGOS/building bricks affords them opportunities to try new ideas, to make mistakes and then figure out how to correct them or make things better. They learn to look at problems from multiple angles and search for the solution that will best solve the problem.
