I am trying to build my classroom into an efficient and effective reader's and writer's workshop. A flexible seating arrangement will be perfect to help students with diverse sensory and kinesthetic needs. These flexible seating items include wobble chairs, bean bags, stack stools, floor seats, and kneeling mats (for kneeling on the floor while working). Studies have shown that students reading level is more likely to improve when given a vast amount of books to choose from in their classroom library. Reading fluency can also improve when students are given the opportunity to books being read aloud to them. The following items have been added to my project to allow students to have a choice in books and listening to books: CD players, read along audio books (varies in reading levels), and a 5-way multi-headphone splitter. The small book rack and book bags will be used to store the audiobooks (it will also allow students to easily flip through each audiobook and choose a book to listen to). The wooden bookshelf will also allow me to display books that have been read in class so that students will be able to find these books easily in the classroom library. Instead of relying on desks for workstations, the whiteboard clipboards will allow students to choose where they would like to solve problems and complete assignments. Lastly, I also requested items to help me make teaching more efficient. These items included a tripod whiteboard, mini-magnetic easel, and Mr. Sketch markers. The tripod whiteboard will be used for lessons in our rug area and the mini whiteboards will be set up at each table for station work with my aides. The markers are for making anchor charts that will allow students to remember our class discussions.
