I teach roughly 85 - 100 diverse students each day. The region is very low socioeconomically, and many students do not have an interest in their academics. On the first day of school, I always ask those who hate math to raise their hands. To my dismay, most or all of the students are more than happy to inform me of their disdain for the topic I love so much. One of their biggest complaints is that the math will never be used in their daily lives. Despite their initial "hate" of the topic, the environment in my classroom is loving, engaging, and cooperative. My students sit in groups of four and work together as peer tutors and motivators during class assignments. They continually give me a great deal of effort and persevere through the sometimes-frustrating topics.
