My students are diverse! They are urban and world savvy but culturally deprived. They crave love and affection and want to know that they are safe and loved and that their teachers truly care. What I am desperate to do is marry their needs and interests with books that they see as relevant to their lives. My students want to be able to make sense of the world around them and reading is key to helping them do just that.
