My students are insightful and creative, but often lack the skills that are required of them to express what they've read and or write on a topic. They need to know that reading comprehension is important. Scholastic News will provide them background knowledge on many topics which is a major benefit in comprehension. The skills sheet will teach them specific skills to help with comprehension i.e. close reading and how to read timelines and graphs as well as helping them to organize their thoughts with graphic organizers when they are charge to write a specific piece i.e. opinions or informational.
