My 5th graders can't get enough practice reading both fiction and non-fiction text. Although they do get access to books at our school library, they would benefit greatly from having access to Scholastic's News and Action magazines. Each day, we have a Balanced Literacy block in which I provide a reading mini-lesson, and then give students independent reading time. I envision using these Scholastic magazines after teaching a mini-lesson on non-fiction text structures. Students would then be given a few questions based on the Scholastic Magazine article of my choice based on non-fiction text structures. Students will be able to keep up with current events and gain extra practice on their reading skills using Scholastic News and Action magazines. I remember using Scholastic Scope magazine in my classroom in the early 2000s, and my middle school students enjoyed them immensely! The magazines would definitely help students become more engaged in reading and target the informational reading common core standards.
