My district is a Title 1 district which means we have a great number of disadvantaged socioeconomic students. My students are all very unique individuals but unfortunately have a common struggle. They all struggle and are below their grade level in reading. There are many different reasons for this and my job is to provide them the skills they need to unlock the written word. Fortunately, I am a certified Orton-Gillingham reading therapist. I am able to give them the skills needed to decode and encode words. I also improve their reading fluency and comprehension to help them pass those high stakes' tests that are given to them. I make sure that they feel comfortable to take risks in my classroom and are not judged for where they are in reading. Teaching in this position is the most rewarding teaching I have done in my 21 years of teaching. It is incredible to watch these students as the mystery of print opens up to them.
