These decodable texts will enhance my students reading progress greatly. I have been working on my reading endorsement and am working with many of the lower readers at my school. I am also getting my LETRS certificate. These texts follow the Science of Reading method that the state is requiring for all teachers who work with early literacy K-2. We do not have a lot of decodable text at our school. Many of the books are leveled and are not great for progressing through explicit and systematic reading instruction. These books would make reading so much more accessible for my low readers, but could be used for both tier 1 students and intervention groups K-2.
These books will help my students read accessible literature every day. As I teach new reading codes to my students, they need decodable text to practice what they have learned. For example, if I teach the ink, ank, onk sounds to my students, they need text with that specific code in the text to practice. I currently have access to word lists, phrases and sentences, but not a lot of decodable text. The students need more practice reading the new codes in text.
Many of the current readers we have in the school have words in the text that go beyond the level of code being explicitly taught in reading classes. This makes it difficult for students to read the text accurately. It will not only improve my students reading skills, but it will also improve their pride and satisfaction in their reading progress. I am currently working with the intervention groups for 2nd grade at my school beyond my homeroom class and this would greatly help these students make the progress in reading that they need after the Covid year.
