As previously stated, my students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds; however, that does not define who they are. For the past couple years, I have created a flipped or blended classroom that has put students in charge of their learning. It has been amazingly successful. Students are learning essential techniques to become life-long learners. At first, they were resistant, simply because they were so use to a teacher who just stands and lectures. They didn't know how to become self-reliant. However, through modeling and grouping students into teams, they learned to learn from each other. Soon I was just needed to help explain harder concepts. Students became much more interested in the material, and more appreciative of their hard work. They would often display their high achievements with pride, and they began to assist others that didn't earn such high grades. It used to be "cool" and "normal" to fail, but my students are breaking that trend now.
