Students in my classroom have been diagnosed with developmental disabilities, including autism. They also have significant cognitive delays as well as low social and adaptive skill sets. Part of achieving independence for my students includes acquiring functional life, recreational, leisure, self-help and social skills. These skills must be taught directly to the students using age-appropriate supplies. Staff in my room use research-based techniques based in applied behavior analysis. My classroom is located at a typical Middle School. General education students are encouraged to and do engage socially with the students in my class. My classroom program is the only program of its kind at the Middle School level in my school district.
