My middle school students are clever, curious and cooperative learners! They are multilingual, multiracial, and care deeply about the world. Imagine being in 8th grade and only being able to read independently at a 2nd grade level. Imagine trying to learn in your classes by asking for help from your peers and teachers but at the same time feeling hopeless, as you're not sure why you can't get this "reading thing" down. This is the reality of my students: they are reading 4-6 grade levels below where they should be. They have learned coping skills to be able to get through school, but need focused support on basic phonics skills.
