Some of my students can't contain that natural rhythm and want their beats to be heard. They tap it out through their pencils on desks, click it out on their tongues, and stamp it out via their feet. It can't be stopped! My students are English language learners in an urban middle school in Indianapolis, Indiana. Our school population of 1,500 7th and 8th graders is very diverse, both racially and socio-economically. The majority of my students are of Mexican heritage or have recently immigrated from Puerto Rico, Central America and Africa. Ninety-five percent of the students I service are on free or reduced lunch. In my classes, students are learning the English skills they need to be successful in their academic careers here in the United States. But as they negotiate the English language and the norms of a new country, my students maintain a sense of pride for their cultures and are eager to share the traditions and music of their homelands.
