We are a very small, rural school. We have a lot of blue-collar working parents that are exhausted at the end of the day. There are no trips to the library and no time for academics in their lives. My students, like their parents, are hard workers. However, in this digital age, my students need to play on the floor and get real old-fashioned hands-on learning and opportunities for higher-order thinking. Puzzles seem simple enough, but the processing required to solve them, give the brain a sensational workout. Puzzle games build all sorts of brain skills needed for reading, writing, solving problems, and coordinating ones thoughts and actions. An additional benefit to puzzle play is by playing together, children learn to work together in problem solving situations. These are skills that will last a lifetime and are so vital for any profession.
