I work at an Alternative High School. My students are great. They come from incredibly tough situations (at least 95% of them are from low socioeconomic households) and some have experienced unimaginable hardships already. I am always impressed with their resiliency and their desire to make a better life for themselves. Some will be the first in their families to graduate high school. Some have children already and are trying to provide a better life for their children. There are many who have jobs so they can help their parents out with rent. These students work hard, although they are at a disadvantage because many are years behind their peers when it comes to education - due to a high mobility rate and feeling disenfranchised from society in general. They need people to believe in them and to establish positive relationships with adults. I am proud to say that my school provides them with this as much as possible.
