My students are fourth graders who live in one of the most challenging and dangerous neighborhoods I have ever seen. Many of these students walk past violence and substance use to get to school every day, and face a wide range of family situations when they return home. School is a safe space for these children. While most fourth graders count down to the weekends, these students often wish the school day were just a bit longer. Instead of celebrating "freedom" on the last day of school, many of these kids dread boring summers filled with staying indoors to keep off the streets. The teachers at the school are passionate, and even though the students face beyond difficult academic pressure (20 of my 21 students speak English as a second language and feel under fire when high stakes testing rolls around) and behavioral consequences, these young children are well-aware of just how important school is to their development and life chances.
