My students have all been identified as having specific learning needs. They are all mainstreamed in the general education setting and come to my room for reading instruction. Many of my students are about 1 to 3 years below grade level in the area of reading. Over the years they have found reading to be difficult and unrewarding. Through hard work they are just beginning to feel successful with learning to read. They need guided instruction and lots of materials at their level in order to continue making these gains. They have just begun to self select chapter books to read independently. Picking a book and committing to read it from start to finish independently is a skill that my students are beginning to master. Seeing them take pride in this success is a great reward!
