Walk Two Moons is used as an anchor text during the first quarter of 6th grade. Through the novel, I teach many ELA Nevada Academic Content Standards, including: ELA RL.6.1-citing textual evidence to support analysis or what the text says; ELA RL.6.2-determining the theme; ELA RL.6.3-plot and characters; ELA RL.6.4-determine the meaning of words and phrases; and ELA RL.5.5-analyze how a particular sentence, chapter, or scene fits into the overall structure and contributes to the development of theme, setting, or plot. In addition to these literature standards, this novel serves as a mentor text for our first pieces of writing. With Walk Two Moons, I am able to teach ELA W.6.3.a-e; which is writing a narrative to develop experiences or events using effective technique, relevant descriptive details, and well-structured event sequences. Additionally, ELA W.6.4-writing appropriate to task, purpose, and audience is addressed through our writing that is based on and inspired by the novel. Walk Two Moons also helps me address Speaking and Listening standards, specifically ELA SL.1.a-d. These standards are critical for my students, as many of them are English Learners, and having a quality discussion and learning to listen effectively are key skills in their language development. Finally, because of COVID, I'm asking for 120 books. This enables each student to have their own book in class. Because students will have their own book, there is a reduction in the amount of germs that are passed because of shared materials, and students are able to leave sticky notes and bookmarks in their book, which allows them to interact more with the text in a meaningful way.
