My students are in many ways very typical high school freshman. They have boundless energy, and are always looking for a creative outlet for that energy. Despite their many similarities to a typical freshman, they have some very unfortunate differences. Our school is located in one of the most poverty stricken neighborhoods of Chicago, and most of our students have very limited access to basic academic resources. Additionally we are a small school with limited enrollment, which benefits our students in many ways but also limits our access to basic technology. All of these factors combine to produce a situation where my students have had almost no opportunity to access the Internet to conduct even a basic research project, and many cannot even type on a physical keyboard.
