Southern California classrooms have a very diverse population. Some students attended preschool for two years, attended transitional kindergarten for one year, then went into kindergarten. They had much experience in a classroom environment, even before walking into a kindergarten classroom. Other students recently moved from a foreign country into the neighborhood, speak limited English, and have never attended a preschool. Regardless of students' academic background, they all need the opportunity to read and progress as readers. The Common Core Standards are for all learners, yet we, as teachers, must differentiate the curriculum to suit all students' academic needs. By having a leveled guided reading library founded on research-based methods, teachers can accommodate the various learners in each classroom.
