I would like my students to have comfortable, safe, inspiring and fun nooks around the classroom to engage in a variety of literacy activities during our Reader's Workshop time. I am hoping to create some fun, plush zones filled with stuffed animals for the kids to read to and hold during their independent time. I would also like to support my ELL students and my learning challenged students with a listening center and technology center so that they can read and listen to fluent reading daily without feeling the frustration and disappointment of not being able to read the book themselves. I truly believe that making literacy time fun and relaxing will help inspire the next generation of lifelong readers. The literacy block is approximately two hours, when I will need to meet with students starting as a whole group with a mini lesson or learning target for their independent time on that day. After this lesson, students attend to literacy centers when they are required to be engaged in a variety of differentiated activities designed to meet their needs while I meet in small targeted skill groups or guided reading groups. Even after several years of teaching, the challenge remains for the teacher to get the students to be independent quickly at the beginning of the school year so that they are able to navigate the room and use the center activities without my assistance. It is nearly impossible to engage all students at the ages of five and six for an extended period of time without providing some things that are fun and unique, and keep them on task while they are actually practicing and maintaining skills. Therefore, funding this project will help me to provide fun and comfortable learning zones for the students to use daily.
