Walk into any restaurant or store. What do you see? Kids playing on cell phones and iPads. Technology touches every aspect of our lives and children need to learn to be digital citizens at a young age. IPads would provide my students with daily opportunities to learn using technology and are a perfect fit for a kindergarten classroom. Laptops can be difficult for kindergarteners to manage. Their size prohibits them from being moved easily by small children, manipulating the mouse/touchpad can be tricky, and logging onto programs can be challenging and time-consuming causing kids to become frustrated. IPads are a good size for small hands and touchscreens make accessing programs quick and easy so kids don’t miss out on learning opportunities. IPads help meet the various learning styles and needs of children. Visual learners gain information from images and highlighted text. Auditory learners hear text or problems read to them. Kinesthetic learners physically manipulate text and images. Additionally, students that have difficulty writing could record responses. Young children learn at different rates and need constant practice with skills. IPads can be used in many ways to differentiate activities and provide this extra practice. Students can listen to stories being read to them, practice math skills and independently check their work using QR codes, and review sight words just to name a few. Additionally, many apps provide immediate feedback that corrects mistakes or moves students forward based on their needs. While students work independently on fun and engaging activities, I could work with other students individually or in small groups. During guided reading lessons, students could practice word families using an app, read a story at their level, and complete response using a sketch pad app. During guided math lessons, students could create and solve word problems using a stamping app.
