I teach a class of highly motivated 6th graders in South Central Los Angeles who love to read and love to learn new facts. They also love to discuss and share new and interesting things they learn, make connections to things they already know and find out more information. My students are all enrolled in the AVID program, which prepares students with historically low access to college for success in college. When surveyed about why they want to go to college, most of them make statements such as, "I want to go to college so that I can buy a house for my parents," or "I want to go to college so that my kids can live in a better place than we are living in now."
