One way to open a student's understanding is through a book, especially through the book I am requesting; "The Glass Castle." Through this book, my students will be reading a memoir of someone with West Virginia ties who knew what it was like to struggle, and yet find success. "The Glass Castle" will be used in order to (of course meet standards and such) educate students on the power of the written word and the themes found embedded within its pages. We will be able to tackle topics such as poverty, families, and choice while also being able to teach literary devices (imagery, characterization, etc.). My students learn to appreciate literature when they read something that has a personal meaning to them. That is why I want to give them this opportunity to read such a text in my class. As a newer teacher, I am currently trying to build my classroom sets and this is one I would love to add for not only this group, but future students as well.
