I teach students from the City of Buffalo in seventh and eighth grade. The students in our school work together to build a strong learning community from kindergarten through eighth grade. They are interesting, dynamic kids who deserve to experience interesting, dynamic stories. We spend time each week discussing literature and how it helps them make sense of the bigger issues in their lives (and in their world). I am continuously impressed by how mature and insightful they are during these group discussions. I strongly believe these conversations can happen outside of the classroom with the help of more relevant texts.
