Think back to when you were a student, working hard on your homework or studying for that killer test. Now, were you sitting with your feet firmly planted on the floor with your back against the chair sitting at a desk? No way. You were laying on your bed or sitting comfortably in your favorite spot on the couch. We've all had those students who seem to have permanent ants in their pants. It's time to move into the classroom of the future which includes flexible seating options for our students. I am asking for a variety of seating options including five ball chairs five wobble cushions and four wobble chairs. I want to give my students options for their seating that will improve their ability to learn. Studies have shown that students that are given options and a sense of ownership in their learning environment tend to do better in their studies. They develop a responsibility in their education when they get flexible seating options. Research also indicates that when a student is given the opportunity to sit on a yoga ball, for example, both sides of their brains are engaged as they balance on their seats as well as concentrate on the content on hand. Our classrooms need to move away from the linear rows of desks with the teacher at the head of the class. Classrooms need to show students completely engaged with their classmates as well as the teacher. Flexible seating enables students to take ownership over how and where they sit. They are no longer just along for the ride but can now feel as though they are directing their own journey.
