Every year students in my class are asked to identify an issue in our community that they feel passionately about changing. They must research the topic, become an expert and identify and advocate for a solution to this issue. Most of our research is done via computer so our sources are often online journals and articles from reputable news sources. Having a library full of non-fiction books would greatly improve our access to appropriate sources and provide a richer experience for students completing research for the first time. Non-fiction reading comprehension is an area of need for my students and having access to compelling non-fiction books in my classroom will help my students with much needed practice as well as could spark a life long passion.
