Much research has been done on using physical space to create what researcher Peter Liljedahl calls a "thinking classroom." In his research, he found that when kids can write on large tables and while standing at whiteboards their work groups are "more eager to start, there is more discussion, participation, and persistence." In my class, we use paint markers to do our work on large table spaces and dry erase markers to write on our windows and vertical white boards. These materials are currently being used in class, and their is a stark difference in the level of engagement and collaboration when kids get to use the paint pens or markers. They are significantly more engaged and more interactive. This project will make a difference in students learning because kids feel like they are having more fun and are more engaged in what we are doing. It might also give the children a different approach to learning. Math and learning can be fun-- you just need to take the fun approach. These markers give students a new and fun approach to mathematics.
