Over the 14 years that I have been teaching, I have seen a change in the "typical" classroom layout. Gone are the days of neat and orderly rows for the nearly nonexistent student who is able to sit all day and learn in a methodical fashion. Many researchers have proven that students need to get up and move while they learn and that a change in environment, including seating, can help them master the many difficult concepts they are required to learn on a daily basis. Students who have a say in how they learn are often times more willing to put in 100% when they are able to become an active participant in their own education, instead of a passive learner who is forced to learn in a way that they may not be comfortable with.
I am hoping to be able to provide a less restricting classroom to encourage all of my students to be more involved with their own education and to make choices based on what works for them! I want to be able to create options with various cushions, seats, and different types of writing surfaces to help all of my students find their optimal seating arrangement. I want to empower my students so that they will be able to continue being successful throughout their education.
