Our school is in an area with a lot of racial diversity and we do a lot to teach kids about how to embrace your culture and celebrate the culture of others. We work to make sure our students can find books with characters that look like them. However, I noticed that there is not a lot out there for students who may be gender nonconforming. There are only a handful of books in the library about a girl who likes sports or a boy who wears dresses. I feel that there is a need for students to have access to books that cover this topic so that Gender nonconforming students can closely relate to a book character, and so other students can become educated about others who may be gender nonconforming. I feel that a lot of bias based bullying incidents come from a lack of understanding differences and I think these books will help.
